ABSTRACT

This retrospective observational survey of the practice of Homeopathic Medical Doctors in Belgium including 313 patients presenting mild COVID-19 symptoms allows us to conclude that during such epidemic situation for which not any effective therapy exists and no vaccination is possible homeopathy should be considered. The efficiency score (healing of symptoms in less than 8 days) is relevant for 83,1% of these patients. 4 homeopathic medicines were prescribed to 66% of them. 1,3% needed hospitalization for some time. Not any loss of chance to cure occurred for these patients. Market data reveals that homeopathy has been largely used for prevention and healing during the early peak of COVID-19 in Belgium.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Nearly 20% of the total population suffer from urticaria for a minimum of one episode during the entire lifetime.Second-generation antihistamines are preferred in majority cases of urticaria. Objective: The present survey was undertaken in pursuit of analyzing the effectiveness and safety of bepotastine in thetreatment of chronic urticaria (CU).Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective questionnaire-based survey. Doctors were identified from four directionalzones of the country, and each was given prevalidated questionnaire booklets. Clinical response was evaluated by urticariaactivity score (UAS) at baseline (D0), day 14 (D14), and day 28 (D28). All the adverse effects were monitored for severity.Specifically, sedation was closely monitored for its occurrence and severity. Results: A total of 50 doctors completed the survey involving 226 patients. The mean UAS score at D0/baseline was 3.47which reduced to 1.71 at D14 and 0.73 at D28. 78 patients were having UAS score in the range of 1–2, 89 patients in 3–4, and59 patients in the range of 5–6 at D0. 59 patients were encountered in Grade 5–6 at D0, which reduced to 45 patients at D14and 29 patients at D28, while 89 patients in score range 3–4 at D0 reduced to 68 at D14 and 38 at D28. Sedation was reportedin only 15 patients (6.6%) that too majority had mild sedation, rated in sedation scale range of 0–5.Conclusion: The present survey indicates that bepotastine is efficacious and safe in the management of CU.

ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the dynamic status of schistosomiasis epidemic situation and Oncomelania hupensis snail status before and after the schistosomiasis transmission interrupted in the mountainous areas of Yunnan Province. Methods The data of schistosomiasis epidemic situation and snail status were collected and analyzed statistically in Jianchuan County from 10 years before the schistosomiasis transmission interrupted to 2008. Results The schistosomiasis control began in Jianch-uan County from 1954. In 1976,the criteria of schistosomiasis endemic controlled were reached, and the infection rate of popu-lation was 0.65%and the infection rate of snails was 0.40%. In 1981,the criteria of schistosomiasis transmission controlled were reached, and the infection rate of population was 0.34%and the infection rate of snails was 1.41%. In 1993,the criteria of schis-tosomiasis transmission interrupted were reached, and the infection rate of population was 0 and the infection rate of snails was 0. There was a fluctuation in the schistosomiasis epidemic situation and snail status during the whole control duration ,but the trend was decreasing. Conclusion The time from schistosomiasis endemic controlled to transmission controlled is relatively short, but the time from transmission controlled to transmission interrupted is relatively long. In the original schistosomiasis en-demic areas, there might be some areas where there is no the disease bud there still are snails.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To understand the application status of alprostadil injections in a hospital to promote the rational drug use. Methods:A retrospective survey was carried out on the application of alprostadil injections in 1 767 hospitalized patients in a hospital in 2013. The main clinic diagnosis, usage and dosage, course of treatment and adverse reactions were statistically analyzed. Results:Alprostadil injections were used widely in all the clinical departments, and the most frequently applied in encephalopathy department and nephrology department. The irrational drug use chiefly included inappropriate indications, usage and dosage, treatment course and solvents. Conclusion:More attention should be paid to the unreasonable use of alprostadil injections, and it is very important to retro-spectively analyze the rationality for guiding rational drug use.

ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the variation rules of schistosomiasis endemic situation before and after schistosomia-sis transmission controlled or interrupted,so as to provide the evidence for the consolidation of control achievements. Meth-ods In Anhui Province,3 counties reaching the criteria of schistosomiasis transmission controlled or interrupted were selected and their historical endemic data were collected and analyzed statistically from 10 years before the schistosomiasis transmission controlled to 2008. Results In Tianchang City, the Oncomelania hupensis snail area was 3.54 hm2 in a part of the lake marsh-land in the year reaching the criteria of transmission controlled(1998),and no snails were found in the year of transmission in-terrupted(2008). No stool-test-positive resident was detected except there were 58 acute schistosomiasis cases in 1993,and the sero-test-positive rate of local residents remained at low levels(0-1.55%). In Taihu County, the snail area was 0.84 hm2 account-ing for 0.06%of its historical accumulative snail areas in the year of transmission controlled(1971),and no snails were found three years before the transmission interrupted (1983). However, the schistosomiasis endemic rebounded 12 years later (1995),there was an outbreak of acute schistosome infections(73 cases),and the snail area increased again to 133.7 hm2 ac-counting for 2.91%of historical accumulative snail areas. After that, the snail area kept on rising and the infection rates of resi-dents and bovine remained higher than 1%. In Guangde County, the snail area was 32.4 hm2 accounting for 1.90%of its histori-cal accumulative snail areas in the year of transmission controlled(1995). After that, the snail area increased progressively, and the schistosomiasis endemic rebounded and there were acute schistosome infections 5 years later. The Spearman tests showed that the sero-test-positive rate(Tianchang City)and the stool-test-positive rates of residents and bovine(Taihu County)had positive correlations with the snail areas(r=0.582,0.401,0.596,all P<0.05). Conclusion The snail status is a key for the consolidation of schistosomiasis transmission controlled and interrupted. Therefore,a valid surveillance system of snail situa-tion should be established as quickly as possible.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE To characterize clinical feature, frequency of isolation and antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial pathogens isolated from patients with healthcare-associated bacterial meningitis(HABM).METHODS We review the charts of all patients in whom the diagnosis was based on(national) diagnostic criteria of healthcare-(associated) infections at Huashan Hospital from 1995 through 2004.The pathogens were routinely isolated,(identified) and susceptibilities against antimicrobial agents were determined by Kirby-Bauer methods.RESULTS During the 10-year study period,109 patients were treated for 120 episodes of HABM.Most of patients had a(history) of recent and remote neurosurgery.Fever was present in all patients, while nuchal rigidity and decrease consciousness were present in less than half of all patients.CSF opening(pressure,) white blood cell count and(protein) were elevated with predominance of neutrophils.A total of 120 strains were isolated from CSF specimen,Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacilli were accounted for 35.8% and(64.2%) of all isolates, respectively.Acinetobacter spp(24.2%),coagulase-negative staphylococci(22.5%),Klebsiella pneumoniae(12.5%),Pseudomonas aeruginosa(10%),Enterobacter cloacae(8.3%) and Staphylococcus aureas(7.5%) were the 6 most frequent isolates and resistance to the first line antibiotics was common among all pathogens isolated.(CONCLUSIONS) The most common risk factor for HABM is neurosurgery.Gram-negative bacilli and staphylococci are important causes of HABM,resistance to the first line antibiotics is common among all pathogens isolated.
